(She's actually a few inches short for her breed.) Weight: 530 pnds Eyes: gold Fur: Red and white Position: bodyguard Background: Long ago, the Goa'uld Nirrti found traces of the DNA of long-lost species of Earth, and resurrected them. One of those species was the dire wolf, whose DNA she combined with more modern wolves and that of telepathic alien beings she found on another world. She named them the weretiew, from the Egyptian words for big and dog. She also resurrected woolly mammoths, saber-tooth tigers, and much older creatures, like perodactyls and T-Rexs. She did the work on a world called Xanadu, and opened it up as a sort of Goa'uld amusement park, a place for them to hunt for fun. Eventually Nirrti got in trouble with the System Lords, and went on the run, abandoning Xanadu. Before she left, she released a rabies-like disease that she expected to wipe out her creations, so that no one else could use them. The disease was a transferred telepathically, so that the infected didn’t even have to come in physical contact -- like a computer virus, though, it only affected those who opened themselves up to it. The weretiew figured out what was going on and took what measures they could to protect themselves from it. Once a tribal people living in packs, they came to live a solitary existence. While Xanadu was no longer a place frequented by Goa'uld, human hunters discovered it. Vala MalDoran, after being "de-snaked", found herself involved with a hunting expedition there. When she saw Ysardith, the expedition leader, about to kill a weretiew cub, she shot and wounded him. His men shot Vala in turn, but she escaped with the cub -- momentarily. When they found her, the cub's mother, Rhael, joined the fray, saving her cub and Vala both. Rhael nursed Vala back to health and taught her to hunt better. Ysardith came back one day, and when he and his men found Vala, they took her prisoner. They took her off-world, saying they'd killed her friends and sold their skins. Vala thought she'd never see Rhael -- or the cub, Ranna -- again. Vala returned one day to Xanadu, this time with SG-1. When she arrived, a sick Rhael attacked her. The rest of SG-1 shot and killed Rhael, but not before she'd infected Vala with the telepathic rabies. When the team returned to Xanadu looking for a cure, they found an adolescent Ranna, and brought her back with them. She helped them find Nirrti's lab, where they found enough info to devise a cure to save Vala, along with the other infected inhabitants of Xanadu. Ranna came to live with Vala at SGC. When Ranna was older, the SGC went public. Ranna went back to Xanadu, where she found a mate, and brought him to Earth, along with a number of other weretiew, forming a new pack that roamed Cheyenne Mountain. Many of them also became active SG team-members. Rakka is one of Ranna's daughters, the runt of Ranna's first litter. Since Vala and Ranna stayed close, Ranna's family was considered a part of Vala and Daniel's, and, since Jeannie Miller was a close frend of the Jacksons', her daughter Madison, aka Merry, baby-sate Rakka as a pup. Rakka and Merry formed a close bond, and have been inseparable ever since. Biology of Species: Weretiew are very wolf-like, but bulkier and with slightly shorter muzzles. They're also about the size of a brown bear. Though they can eat fruits and vegetables, they are mostly carnivorous. They are very like wolves in social behavior, but they are as intelligent as humans. They have no special physical abilities or attributes -- they are as susceptible to injury or disease as a wolf, and their senses of smell and hearing are the same as wolves, while their eyesight is similar to a humans -- they can see in colour, and not as well in the dark as a wolf. They can project their thoughts to any being with a brain, regardless of whether that species is telepathic or not. (Merry is not telepathic.) They can also read most minds, but they consider it very taboo to do so without permission. They live a life-span slightly shorter than that of humans -- about sixty years. They mature a little faster, especially when young (at a year old they are more like a five-year-old) and are considered adults at 16 (like being 18 as a human).
